As the Newtons (John Newton and his wife Polly) lay in the Bell and Bear Inn at Stone, they recalled how often they had been restored to each other after long and dangerous separations. They resolved together to declare God’s goodness, not merely in secret or to each other but by the whole course of their lives; to love Him more than they loved each other; to commit to Him their dearest concerns and, in every trouble, go to Him who had so often heard their prayers and done them good.
